A Tyranny of Ice and Cold

Photograph by Kevin Hurtack

Winter unfurls

sheets of snow

like funeral shrouds

upon fields

of Autumn’s faded gold

while we mourn

a summer grown old

leaving us huddled

like beggars and thieves

around our fires’

fickle heat

that does little

to keep

the frigid shadows

from our doors.

Just prisoners, we are

of this tyranny

of ice and cold

biding our time

until the heavens bestow

the golden sun

upon our jagged shores

once more
